What Colour Says About Us:

Everyone has a favourite colour, one that naturally draws us to it, that we feel comfortable with...but what does colour say about us and the way we perceive colour?

Trends come and go but generally we tend to associate shades of blue with being cool and calming; green with nature, good luck and fertility, (although also a symbol of jealousy and greed!); red, orange and yellow with high energy and intense emotions; purple with royalty, (probably because purple dyes used to be so rare and expensive that only monarchs could afford to wear them!).

Neutral shades of white, black, grey and brown each carry their own associations; white- purity, black - power,  grey tones - smooth and modern, and brown - down-to-earth and secure. Advertising companies have been using the psychology of colour for marketing for decades and will choose specific colours for logos and packaging to subliminally introduce a message to consumer

Our culture also plays a big part in colour psychology too.  For example, In Western cultures, brides favour white wedding dresses as a sign of purity, but in Eastern cultures white is associated with death and mourning and are more likely to wear red.

As said, we all have a colour that we are drawn to.  If you don’t think you have a favourite colour, then look around at your walls, your artwork, your clothes, things that you surround yourself with, and you will see that there will be a dominant colour.  We can also feel strongly about a colour that we don’t like, too! This colour may be associated with a past experience and is worth investigating to better understand your personality.

Ok, so we know what colours we like, why we like them and what they say about us but, like anything, our favourite colour should be used in moderation! It is always good to surround ourselves with things that we like and that bring positivity into our lives but to achieve balance we should also make ourselves step out of the box!  Ideally we should try to incorporate a few colours in with our favourites that we are not so keen on, that maybe make us feel a little uneasy. This makes for greater variety and interest. There is always too much of a good thing!
