2022 Mixed Media on circular board 100x100x2.5cm, unframed, ready to hang (note: this artwork is circular not square as suggested in the image)
No matter how much we embrace our own individual moral compass, it feels like there is a growing disconnect between the set of values some of our institutions live by and our own.
In the absense of examples of just behaviour from those institutions we are likely to justify and embellish our own moral compass, however unaligned with the rest of society.
The patterned off-centre ‘needle’ was created using modelling paste and painted with a brighter colour than the rest of the peice to signify the apparent rightiousness of our own idea of what is good. From within our own echo chamber of morality the perception of our surroundings is one of a crumbling fabric of society. The rough cement-like surface was created using acrylic coloured sand bound in PVC glue.
Rachel creates works in a variety of media, mainly acrylics, producing atmospheric and deceptively understated pieces often on a large scale.

Our fossilised past illuminates potential
The tendency as human beings to want to bury aspects of our past in favour of an unsullied future and a pain free present ignores the possibility that the past can inform. Indeed there is an occasional dare to hope that the suppressed fossils of our past may reemerge from the inertia, ’gilded’ with the courage to harvest those parts that infuse us with the confidence to live free. Some of the ignored opportunities to nourish potential fall away and are subsumed within our deeper, darker layers.
Thickened gesso and gold leaf create the sculptural elements that emerge from a background of dull gesso and diluted acrylic paint. The black, bottom third layer is highly sanded and gently varnished to create depth.
Painted on an appropriately primed museum standard wooden floating painting panel. A poplar plywood surface, it has been sustainably sourced (PEFC and FSC certified) and an aluminium subframe that will not react to changes in humidity or temperature creating a warp free panel with lasting longevity.

A protectionist tendency to isolate from an interactive world renders the space and life within those rigid borders largely baron and inert. Insulated from an enlightened and dynamic existence any brief light become unsustainable. Gesso forms the low relief sculptural elements and the overall texture and detail is enhanced by application and removal of many acrylic paint layers.

2022 Acrylic paint on wood panel 120x120cm, unframed, ready to hang
Colin's art is inspired by the collective experience of contemporary living. City life is filled with an array of imagery; from airport and train station digital monitors to pixilated television and computer screens in the home; city landscapes lit up at night; supermarket shopping aisles and their myriad of packaging, lighting and random colour combinations.
Colin is fascinated by this imagery and combines aspects of this reality to create an equivalent visual experience. The relationship between urban living and all its technology is a recurring theme and influence in his work.
