Alice Gur-Arie began her career as a conceptual copywriter, graphic designer, and creative director, eventually responsible for positioning global brands, and developing and executing their marketing and communication strategies. Several years ago she returned to her creative roots, publishing work that "sits in the sweet spot where fine art and photography converge."
Bringing her storytelling abilities into a visual realm, Alice overlays her textured, sensory world with a strong narrative. But it is the concept of "seeing" that is at the heart of her practice. Combining photography with digital painting, she invites the viewer to replace the window through which they see the world, with a lens that interprets the world into something that is at once familiar and foreign. Once engaged, she asks the viewer to question what they understand of this new reality, as well as how they feel about it.
Her work starts with photographs, taken in foreign locales. "Landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, and nature dominate my portfolio, but as there are no parameters to my interests there are no exclusions to subject matter." Pictures are spontaneous, and are neither planned nor staged. She comments, "This means I need to think on my feet in terms of composition, lighting, timing etc." In some cases, the mode of transport itself becomes a significant element of the finished image, producing aerials and underwater worlds.
Treating the photographs as a canvas, images are digitally "repainted" in layers with a "brush", until the desired result is achieved. Of her creative approach she says, "What is critical, is understanding that my work is not about digital manipulation or software, but about my vision, and my ability to transform the canvas into an aesthetically compelling, memorable, visual experience."
